“Savor on Basque Country & Rioja!”
DAY 1
Flight Eindhoven-Bilbao. 7:10-9:10 a.m. Luxury minibus transfer to the most exclusive bodegas of the Rioja (153 km).
After an extensive tour of the vineyards and in the expansive wine cellars, tasting of their best white Rioja and of course the red Reservas and Gran Reservas. This combined with 4 Haute Cuisine tasting dishes.
After lunch, take it easy back to Bilbao, with visits/stops at other bodegas along the way.
In the evening we are taken on foot by a Basque lady, who accompanies us to the best four Pintxo bars in Bilbao, explains this food culture and lets us taste all kinds of delicacies. With the satisfaction of dinner we spend the night in Hotel Carlton.
DAY 2
09:00 am, breakfast.
11:00 am, educational Basque cooking class a short walk from the hotel. Followed by a light lunch of homemade dishes, Pintxo style. (Instead of the cooking class, there is also room for an extensive visit to the Guggenheim Museum)
2:30 pm, time at leisure in the beautiful city of Bilbao. Still possible to visit the Guggenheim Museum. (12 minutes walking from the hotel)
20:00 pm, luxury minibus transfer of 15 minutes to one of the best and most special restaurants in the world, just outside Bilbao: Azurmendi. 3 Michelin stars for over 10 years. Chef Eneko Atxa has created a culinary experience here that cannot be put into words. You have to experience it!
11:45 pm, back to Hotel Carlton.
DAY 3
08:30 am, luxury minibus transfer to traditional Basque sheep farm (125 km) where they produce the unique Idiazabal cheese. (Light breakfast in the bus)
This gourmet cheese was awarded “European Gourmand Heritage” status in 1992 and is recognized as one of the best sheep’s cheeses in the world. After an educational look at the production process, a short walk through the meadows with the shepherds followed by a rare treat of cheese, made 100% from the milk of the sheep around you.
Then scenic drive to a historic fishing village (30 km). Before we settle on the terrace of a simple but irresistible fish restaurant, tour and aperitif at a small vineyard located in the hills above the fishing village.
Here they produce the typical Txakoli wines, a dry fresh light sparkling white wine from the Hondarrabi Zuri grape.
After a nice glass of wine in the hills we are seated within a few minutes at a table with a glowing charcoal grill, overlooking the harbor. You can’t get it fresher than here. Sea bass, turbot, sea bream, scallops, octopus and gambas from the grill at its very best. (And yes, there is also beef tenderloin)
After this late perfect farewell lunch we accept the return journey and drive to Bilbao Airport. (82 km) Flight Bilbao-Eindhoven. 8.45pm-10.40pm.
